REMEMBERING THE GOLDEN BOY
A FINAL BODYFORGE TRIBUTE TO LARRY SCOTT
Earlier today, the bodybuilding world lost another star from its sky.
We sadly mark the passing on of Larry Scott, the first ever Mr. Olympia, due to aggravated complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
The Golden Eagle was 75 years young.
It is hard to overstate the massive influence this man had on the bodybuilding world back in the 60s. Larry was the absolute king of the muscle world back then – an incredible amalgamation of Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman and Phil Heath.
He was to bodybuilding what the Beatles were to music, and what Michelangelo was to art.
Top bodybuilder and author Rick Wayne described him as “The Eighth Wonder of the World” at the 1965 Mr Olympia. The mighty Lou Ferrigno himself said that the mass hysteria that overtook the crowd when Larry walked onstage was “something I have never seen the likes of before or since”.
A true icon – with a legacy that still resonates even in modern bodybuilding.
Not only was Larry a muscle phenomenon, a man renowned for his 20 inch biceps built out of the curls that to this day still bear his name, but he was also a true gentleman, a man completely unaffected by his fame and his achievements.
I have yet to hear of one person who has met Larry personally and has a bad word to say about him. The embodiment of the Golden Era of bodybuilding, he was a class act in every way.
As long as barbells and dumbells are curled in a gym somewhere in the world, as long as anyone still wants to sculpt a statuesque physique using weight training and as long as biceps are revered as the one single shot that encompasses bodybuilding and strength, the Golden Boy will forever live in our hearts.
Sincere condolences to all Scott’s family, at this difficult time. The BodyForge salutes you.
Godspeed, Larry! And thank you for the amazing memories!
