MEET JOANNA
Hey everyone, please meet Joanna.
She is 13 years old and has been training at The BodyForge for around 8 weeks now.
Two months sounds like a pretty short time but it’s enough time at The Forge for some amazing stuff to happen.
The following is an account that Joanna wanted to share of a particular episode where something amazing happened to her.
This is how miracles and breakthroughs happen every day here. Things that have the potential to change people’s lives – when handled properly.

JOANNA’S STORY – THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED
The following is an account of Joanna’s version of the story as relayed to me. Where she was too polite to say things the way they really were, I added them in myself. Honesty is the best policy.
“When I first started I was terrified. I could barely do any of the exercises but I found a lot of people helping me and supporting me.
It’s one of the things I noticed about the people at The BodyForge – they love giving each other a lot of encouragement and assistance. It just made me feel good to be training there. By the third visit, I was already loving going there.
My strength grew each day but it took time. I slowly realized that this isn’t something that happens overnight. It needs commitment and dedication.
So far, it has been two months and you might think that is not enough but it’s safe to say that my life changed.
Maybe my body hasn’t changed as much as I would like from the outside but, what has changed very quickly, were my strength levels.
I actually only wrote this because of something that happened recently.
One of the exercises I was doing really well in was the leg press. I’m pretty strong there, and in a few weeks, I had progressed from barely being able to lift 22kg to repping out with 70kg.
So one day, Don comes up to me and says “I’ll be coaching you on the leg press with you today. Want to teach you something.”
Fair enough.
So we did the warm ups and normal exercises and I hit my usual high of 70kg.
“Great work”, said Don. I was really pleased that he appreciated it as it was pretty tough.
“Now let’s do another one” he said, and loaded the leg press to 120kg.
I protested. There was no way I could do that weight. I had never done it before.
“It’s OK” said Don. “Trust me. I will be with you on every rep. Let’s prepare for it.”
So, with misgivings the size of mountains, I sat down on the leg press.
Don talked to me all the time, telling me to visualize what I was going to do. He told me not to be afraid, that he was going to be there every rep with me. He made me prepare mentally and made me focus intensely on what I was going to do.
I breathed in and unracked the weight.
And I just knocked out 20 reps with 120kg.
I couldn’t believe it. This was a massive personal record.
“Well done, really well done” said Don, smiling. Like he knew it all along.
I was getting ready to chalk it up as an amazing feat when he put another 30kg on.
“Now let’s try a last one.”
I looked at him. What had he just said?
The machine had 150kg on it plus change.
I had never done more than 70kg and Don had just put double the weight on it.
“That’s for me?”
“Course!”
The man was clearly insane.
I tried to gently point out that he needed urgent psychological attention.
“Hush now!” he said. “Time to shine! This is going to be amazing. Trust me. I would never ever give you something impossible to do. Only something very difficult to do.”
So I sat down. How could I do this?
Again, Don talked to me all the time, preparing me for the lift.
And, dare I say it, after a minute, I actually believed I could do it.
And then I unracked the weight and did 20 reps.
Yes, 20 reps with double the biggest weight I had ever done before.
Just unbelievable.
If anyone had told me this, I would just have put it down to another tall gym tale.
If Coach could do this with me in just 15 mins, what could he do in a week?
Or a month?
Or three?
I was so amazed it did not strike me till much later that I had done something really incredible. I spent most of that time floating on air.
And then I realized that this was Don’s aim all along.
He didn’t just want me to see how strong I was.
He wanted me to believe in myself more than I had ever done before.
I now realize that in order to be my best I need to take every day as a challenge and as another chance to learn from my mistakes and redo what I did wrong.
At the end of the day, it is my own personal journey and I am the one who is proud of myself.
It’s all about believing in your own inner strength.
